Smart Metering and Wireless M2M is the fifth consecutive report from Berg Insight analysing the latest developments on the European AMM market.

Worldwide, meter deployments continue to increase, with the majority of deployments still taking place in the United States. However, North America dominance is changing as European and Asian companies increase shipments.

Enel’s massive project in Italy installed 27.5 million units, the largest metering project in the world. There are already at least 122 automated metering projects in China, and other activity is evident throughout Asia. More than 700 automated metering projects have been identified in Europe, and the number of active vendors is rapidly climbing. Technical innovation is being shown in Israel, South Africa and in the Australia/New Zealand marketplace.

The meter industry is poised for the most important technological development since the introduction of the Ferraris induction meter over a century ago. Replacement of electromechanical meters with basic solid state meters has already started. This trend has now been overtaken by a development which has been brewing for several years but in the last 12 to 18 months has taken a significant step forward to reality.
